Most popular Leaving Certificate subject with significant gender discrepancy is Home Economics

February 23, 2020

The most popular subject at Leaving Certificate in 2019 with a significant discrepancy between the male and female participation rate was Home Economics. Over 12,000 students did Home Economics - making it the fifth most popular subject (excluding Irish, English and Mathematics), after Biology, Geography, French and Business. Despite it's popularity, only 1,513 male students did Home Economics, representing 13% of the total number doing the subject.

Other subjects with a low male participation rate were Music and Art where only 30% and 32% of the total number of students doing the subject were male.

These low participation rates are likely caused by traditionally low participation rates by boys in these subjects.

We have built a tool, the Athena Tracker, which identifies students strengths by predicting their potential in each subject. This can be used by teachers to help students choose subjects which best suit their strengths, regardless of traditional norms. For more information, visit our website.
